This page contains descriptions of a few of the system application solutions that Ortech Engineering has delivered to our customers. Please contact Edgar Dohmann for more information.

Application solutions for the following customers are included here:

Amoco

TRIACS Valve & Pump Control System

When Amoco Oil Company installed a Honeywell TDC-3000 Distributed Control System (DCS) in the product handling area of its Texas City, Texas refinery, they chose the TRIACS Valve & Pump Control System from Ortech Engineering to remotely monitor and control the valves and pumps in the refinery.

Amoco's refinery has over 700 valves and pumps which were to be operated from a single control room via the new DCS system. Ortech Engineering's TRIACS system, which utilizes an RS485 communication network to permit individual modules to be located near the field device, allowed Amoco to save over $2,000,000 in wiring and installation costs over alternative solutions.

Refer to our TRIACS product literature for more information or contact Rick Vaughn at Amoco.

Other System Solutions for Amoco

OEI's engineers have worked with Amoco since 1980 on a number of other system solutions for Amoco's refineries in Texas City, Texas and Whiting, Indiana.

These systems have included the following:

Please contact us for more information on any of these system solutions.

Cold Brook Energy

Tank Sentinel System

Cold Brook Energy operates a petroleum product distribution terminal in Bangor, Maine that supplies fuel for many service stations in Northern and Central Maine. Each of the storage tanks at Cold Brook Energy hold up to 300,000 gallons of fuel.

Because of their concern for the environment, Cold Brook Energy wanted to install an early-warning leak detection system to alert emergency response personnel if a petroleum fuel spill were to occur. Cold Brook Energy chose the Tank Sentinel System from Ortech Engineering to perform this critical function because of its unique capabilities.

The Tank Sentinel System detects unauthorized product level changes as small as 1/8-inch and generates an alarm whenever such an event occurs. A key feature of the Tank Sentinel System is its ability to automatically dial and transmit voice or alphanumeric messages to pagers or telephones so specific alarm conditions can be reported to off-site personnel. The Tank Sentinel System also uses intelligent algorithms to ensure that normal product expansion and contraction due to temperature changes are not improperly reported as alarms.

Refer to our OEI Sentinel System product literature for more information or contact Tim Ryan at Cold Brook Energy.

NASA

Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC)

Ortech Engineering has worked extensively with the sytems developers at NASA-GSFC to develop fuzzy logic algorithms for improving the control stability of their simulator for the shuttle RMS (remote manipulator system).

The RMS simulator (RMSS) at GSFC is used to plan, analyze, and prepare for shuttle missions to support the Hubble Telescope. By integrating the fuzzy logic algorithms developed by Ortech Engineering into the RMSS control system, improved fidelity and stability has been achieved.

Johnson Space Center (JSC)

Ortech Engineering is currently involved in a Phase II SBIR (Small Business Innovation Research) program with NASA-JSC to utilize fuzzy logic to improve the efficiency and economics of operating thermal control systems.

OEI has established a laboratory test bed for developing and testing advanced control algorithms for heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems utilizing fuzzy logic and expert system technology. This is an on-going project which shows great promise for aerospace, commercial, and residential applications.
